Feelin’ lucky on St. Patrick’s Day? Try these iPhone apps out

If there’s one thing that’s spectacular about being (a little bit) Irish, it’s the crazy amount of sloganeering that I get to enjoy guilt-free around St. Patrick’s Day. There’s all the implied statements about holding your liquor of course, but then there’s also the delightful “Kiss Me I’m Irish,” and the famed “Luck of the Irish.” Well, that’s all good for me. But what about the rest of you? The non-Irish deserve just as much luck! With that in mind, there are a few apps you might be able to use to keep the good times on your side.

Supposing you find yourself in a casino, you can increase the possibility of luck flipping your way with the Learn Blackjack app ($0.99). The app comes with a cheat sheet that lets you know whether or not to hit, stand or double-down based upon your card combinations and the card the dealer is showing. Once you’ve reviewed the chart you can take a test to make sure you really know when to hit or stand. That will come in handy later, as using the app in an actual casino might be frowned upon, depending on where you gamble.

Sometimes luck just isn’t in the cards. When that’s the case, try looking up at the sky and trying the stars, with the free iScopes astrology app. iScopes offers thirty categories of daily, monthly and yearly horoscopes. You can even send your friends their horoscope as long as you have their birthday in your phone. The app is well designed and easy to read. You’ll get out of bed and know whether the stars are in your favor right away.

If the stars suggest you stay in bed, there’s no reason you can’t turn lemons into lemonade with the Love and Romance Tips app ($0.99). This app might help you get lucky in a very different sense. Love and Romance Tips offers up daily tips for improving your romantic life for both men and women. You can save your favorite tips and even set reminders for your special someone.

Outside of the bedroom, gambling and horoscopes, my favorite way to get lucky might be with a really positive fortune. With an iPhone, you don’t need to eat Chinese food every night just to get a new fortune, either. Two free apps, Good Fortune Cookie and Lucky Cat with Daily Fortune both offer users the opportunity to get some positive vibes from a (digital) paper slip.

Good Fortune Cookie is the more literal fortune cookie app of the two. It lets users tap open a cookie to reveal the fortune inside. Unlike at a restaurant, you’re free to grab another if you don’t like what the first had to say. Though I have to think that would nullify the content of the fortune.

Lucky Cat with Daily Fortune is a bit more light hearted. In this app, you’ll pet the cartoon kitty in order to fill up a Luck-O-Meter that will determine just how lucky you’ll be each day. Once the meter reaches its max height for the day, you’ll receive a fortune that will hopefully lead you on to better and brighter things. You can then share your fortune via text and email.

No matter which app you download in an effort to feel lucky, just remember that you can be just as lucky as any person of dubious Irish descent. Sure, St. Paddy’s day is fun, but sometimes you make your own luck in this world. Especially when you have the right apps.
