If you look at the iTunes App Store ratings for the FedEx Mobile application, you will find a love/hate relationship. Of the more than 9,000 ratings for all versions, well more than half are either one star or five star. This reviewer understands both sides of the spectrum.

For instance, those who gave it one star probably were not happy with having to create an account just to use the app. Registering takes you to the Fedex iPhone site, which, while simple, is still time consuming, It’s a lot of work just to track a package.

On the plus side, tracking packages and finding FedEx locations is very easy. The app uses a clean and clear design to give you all the information you need. To the five-star reviewers, that is really all you need.

The app has some other helpful features in addition to tracking shipments. A customer can get rates, prepare a package for shipment and send feedback directly to FedEx. I’m not sure how many people would use the shipment feature for purely logistical reasons — you still need a printer for labels — but it’s something that could be made better in future versions.

Overall, the FedEx Mobile for iPhone app is great for what most customers really want: seeing shipment information from their phone. But it could be improved so that getting to that data isn’t a huge hassle.
