ESPN Bowl Bound for iPhone a championship contender of a football app

If ESPN Bowl Bound is any indication, I can’t wait to see what kind of app the network cooks up for March Madness. Bowl Bound is a sleek, informative and easy-to-use sports multimedia experience.

It should be noted that this is an app best viewed on a wifi connection. While there are a good amount of typewritten news stories and analysis pieces to be read, there is a tremendous amount of video content to view. Video highlight packages and video analysis from ESPN make up several sections of the app.

For those who prefer to read, you’ll find some cool features that are reminiscent of the kind of fact sheets the student information directors hand out to journalists covering the games. There is a continually updated Bowl Season Research tab that’s one big page of facts and tidbits you might not know about some of the bowl teams. While it can be cumbersome to navigate the extremely long page, its inclusion could make for some very happy college football fans.

ESPN integrates this mountain of information, including the usual scores, schedules, rankings and Twitter feeds in one of the smartest-looking app interfaces I’ve seen.

A ticker runs across the app the entire time with the latest bowl relevant stories, while the latest videos are positioned near the top of the page, letting the rest of the app’s categories take the center of the page. In short, everything feels very “ESPN,” from the color scheme to the professional level of detail.

About the only thing missing from ESPN Bowl Bound is an option to look up stories for a specific team. Saving that, It would be hard to ask for much more out of a niche sports app. ESPN Bowl Bound is a BCS-Bowl-worthy iPhone app.
