Games

Master of Blocks (iPhone, iPad) Free (was $0.99)

This game presents a great spin on the classic Tetris. Hopefully you’re familiar with Tetris, as it’s one of the greatest puzzle video games ever. If not, it basically amounts to trying to arrange falling blocks so that they cover an entire horizontal span – you score by creating complete lines from one side of the screen to the other.

Master of Blocks adds another wrinkle, by putting you in the position of being the “master,” rather than the player. Instead of arranging the blocks, you’re choosing which blocks show up next, with the aim to get the player to fail. The game also includes a multiplayer function, which sounds like it could be very fun.

Square9 (iPhone, iPad) Free (was $2.99) [on sale for 24 hours]

It’s a hard concept to explain, but puzzle game enthusiasts will probably take a shine to Square9, since it combines several great puzzle games’ ideas into one package.

The object of Square9 is to create squares by connecting the corners, like in the game Dots. You know, the one you play on paper with a friend where you each take turns drawing a line between two dots, trying to make squares and score points. The app also combines principles of Sudoku by incorporating numbers for the sides. And it adds a time factor by making the sides of the squares descend from the top of the screen, forcing you to make a decision before the block disappears.

It’s hard to explain, but if you grab it while it’s free today only, you can figure out exactly how it works for yourself.

Entertainment

Photastic HD (iPhone, iPad) Free (was $0.99)

Another app for manipulating photos, but instead of changing their color or improving them, Photastic is for ruining them.

The app lets you add destruction effects to your photos – effects like warping, liquefying, and dissolving them. It only includes three major effects and the ability to heal photos from them, but the app’s free, so it’s hard to complain.

The Greatest Paper Airplanes HD (iPhone) $0.99 (was $1.99)

Ever see someone create one of those incredible stealth-bomber-esque paper airplanes, the kind that look like they were first conceived by Leonardo Di Vinci and professionally crafted by some kind of paper-folding artist? I do.

This app contains the secret of 20 of those awesome planes, with detailed instructions of how to create them. That’s basically the secret to impressing any kid ever, so use your power responsibly and don’t disrupt too many classrooms with your newfound abilities.
