Download Discounts for Mar. 2: Fox in Socks, Mad Skills Motocross, Tiki 10 Pin

In honor of the birthday of legendary children’s author Dr. Seuss, several Seuss-themed apps are on sale this week. We’ve got the skinny on one of them, the unparalleled Fox in Socks, but you can find the others by searching “Oceanhouse Media” in the iTunes search bar. Meantime, read about these, and other discounted apps, in today’s Download Discounts.

Fox in Socks – Dr. Seuss (iPhone, iPad) $2.99 (was $3.99)

One of the greatest of the Dr. Seuss books (and my childhood favorite), Fox in Socks is an app version of the classic tongue-twister story. It features three different ways to enjoy it, allowing children to read to themselves and to read to them with an audio narrator and the words on each virtual page highlighted so kids can keep up. The third method is an Auto Play mode that reads the book and flips the pages automatically to enjoy the book more like a movie.

Fox in Socks helps kids learning to read by allowing them to interact with the text. Kids can touch pictures and see and hear words related to them to associate all three, and highlighted text can be touched to hear it read aloud as well. The app also is optimized for use on both the iPhone and the iPad.

Mad Skills Motocross (iPhone, iPad) Free (was $1.99)

Mad Skills Motocross is a combination of side-scrolling motocross racing and realistic physics, creating a racing experience unlike most others in the App Store. It features 52 tracks with a range of difficulties, all of which are built to be more than just dirtbike obstacle courses.

You get two game modes with Mad Skills — a Career mode and a Time Attack mode, and you and your friends can race each other’s “ghosts” to try to beat one another’s best times using OpenFeint challenges. Support from OpenFeint also brings the game achievements and leadeboards, as well.

Tiki 10 Pin (iPhone, iPad) Free (was $0.99)

Monkeys go bowling in the jungle-themed Tiki 10 Pin, which makes use of simple touch controls to create some quick-moving bowling action. Just drag your monkey left and right to determine where he stands, then flick up the screen to throw the ball. How you flick determines where the ball ends up, so you want to try to do it straight, but you can also tap a pair of arrows to give the ball a little curve after the fact.

Tiki 10 Pin includes five different monkey characters to choose from and has three play modes: you can take on up to three friends with pass-and-play multiplayer, play against computer-controlled opponents, or go solo and try to rack up a high score.
