Download Discounts for Jan. 17: Gearded 2!, Cause of Death, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3

Today’s the last day to save on a few Electronic Arts games that are discounted in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and while they don’t have anything to do with the famed Civil Rights leader, they will give you something to do when you’re supposed to be working come Tuesday. Get all the details, plus a free puzzle game in Geared 2!, on our Download Discounts list.

Geared 2! (iPhone) Free (was $0.99)

This sequel to the puzzle hit Geared is only free for a limited time, and if you like using your brain and hamsters, grab it while you can. Your job: use touch controls to drag gears onto the screen and connect a spinning hamster wheel to disparate gears scattered around. You’ll have to think creatively and logically to make the gears you’re given connect and power all the gears on the screen, and the faster you do so, the better your score.

There are 200 levels available in the game, and in a cool twist, 140 of them have been created by Geared users. If you’ve got ideas for cool Geared 2! levels, you can make them using the game’s level editor, and upload them to the Internet for other players try out. And while you’re doing it, you can use your iPhone’s iPod functionality to play your own music.

Cause of Death: Can You Catch the Killer? (iPhone, iPad) $0.99 (was $1.99)

This text-based detective story has an interesting plot and requires you to pay attention to the clues to catch a serial killer in San Francisco. You’ll make choices on the fly that affect the story and try to make good decisions and analyze evidence in order to earn points and unlock an additional scene at the end of the story.

Cause of Death includes the first episode of the story, and you can play additional stories by buying them through in-app purchase for $0.99 each. Episodes are occasionally free-to-play during certain times, as well, when they’re considered “Now Airing” — think of it like watching an episode of a show on TV. You’ll need a network connection to play the “Now Airing” episodes, but buying the ones you want to play strips out any ads and downloads them to your device.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (iPhone) $2.99 (was $5.99)

It’s the fighting game classic from the mid-1990s in all its bloody glory, now on a small screen. Play through the original Mortal Kombat 3 tournament as it appeared on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Genesis years ago. Ultimate MK3 features 10 arenas from the original game and 13 characters, as well as all their unique Fatalities and Babalities, a form of finishing move that turns your opponents into babies to… humiliate them, apparently. Regardless, Babalities are as hilarious as Fatalities are brutal.

Even better than its single player mode, Ultimate MK3 lets you take on other players using its online or Bluetooth multiplayer modes. You can go head-to-head with your opponents, or challenge them to Time Trial matches in which you’ll compare your best times.
