Bug Heroes is a game that marries a lot of different genres into one fun experience. It was worth paying for when it was going for $1.99 in the App Store, and it’s certainly worth a look now that it’s heading up our Download Discounts list with the phenomenal price tag of “free.” Read about it and some other choice discounted offerings below — at least a couple of them won’t cost you a penny.

Bug Heroes (iPhone, iPad) Free (was $1.99)

Take castle defense, mix it with role-playing and wrap the whole thing in a two-stick shooter — with insects — and the result is Bug Heroes. You can switch through three different titular bug heroes throughout the game, each with its own abilities, skills, strengths and weaknesses.

You’ve got two jobs in Bug Heroes: Protect your food horde from enemies by building turrets and shooting down evil bugs, and search through the surrounding kitchen for more food to grow your stash and purchase new equipment and weapons for your team. There’s a lot of action to be had here, and for free, Bug Heroes is totally worth it.

Lifelike Craig HD (iPhone, iPad) $1.99 (was $2.99)

Craiglist on your iOS device, Lifelike Craig HD turns the listings found on the classifieds website into something that actually looks like a classified ad section in a newspaper. It allows you to search through listings, respond to ads and save them for later.

Lifelike Craig divides up Craigslist into categories so you can easily search through it and find what you’re looking for, and its clean interface makes ads easy to read. You can also create and post your own listings to the site using your iOS device, and share listings with friends.

S.Holmes (iPhone, iPad) Free (was $1.99)

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a lot of Sherlock Holmes adventures. The Adventure of the Speckled Band is one such Holmes mystery, and it’s free for about a week in the app S.Holmes. The text in its entirety is included in the app, along with illustrations to go with it, but the app also goes further to immerse you in its narrative.

S.Holmes also includes animations and sound, using them at key moments to augment the story. Things like screams and other sounds get played through your device’s speakers, elevating the experience of reading to a whole new level.
