Do some real big game hunting with Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter

With all due to respect to what real hunters might consider “big game,” there can be no bigger game than the mighty dinosaurs. In Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter this Jurassic-Park-by-way-of-Big-Buck-Hunter-Pro app lets you live out the fantasy of carefully and stealthily hunting everything from raptors to the mighty T-Rex.

“Carefully” is the key word there. Players will not get to land on a dino-infested island and begin mauling their prey left and right. Instead, Carnivores starts players out in a vast, but fairly quiet, island. The player then uses an allotment of points to pick out which dino types he or she will attempt to hunt and the guns to use to do the hunting.

Soon you’re on the island, walking through cover, using a dinosaur call whistle to bring your enemy closer. The use of camo, radar and tranquilizers can also come in handy, but you’ll notice there are no grenade launchers. You’ll have to shoot your target with a limited number of bullets. When the bullets run out, you evacuate the area and count up the points accumulated from your kills.

It might not be as exhilarating as being armed to the teeth, but there’s something to be said about getting off a good shot on a dino, and then following his blood trail as he slowly limps away in an effort to avoid being finished off. To be honest, the first time you take a stegosaurus down like that it can be a bit intense.

The visuals in Carnivores aren’t much to write home about, but they’re more than serviceable to convey the vastness of the terrain. Even the island you start out on feels gigantic.

For the patient player, Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter offers a great hunting-game experience. It seems strange to applaud a dinosaur-hunting game for its realism, but this app earns that praise completely.
