Currency Calculator is easy, but costly

For on-the-fly, easy-to use exchange rate calculations, Currency Calculator is a handy tool. But at $1.99, it’s more costly than similar Finance category iPhone and iPod Touch apps.

While the program does a good job of switching one currency for another, it’s really nothing more than a regular calculator, which your mobile device already includes for free.

Currency Calculator allows you to type in an amount of money and see it converted to as many as 132 denominations of currency.  You can determine a set of commonly used currencies to switch to quickly.  This allows you to check euros, British pounds, Japanese yen, or any other currency you want, all from the same screen.

If you don’t know how much money you have, or need to figure out a transaction as well as the exchange, the other half of the app is a regular calculator, with all the normal functions.  So you can figure out how much money 54 25-cent coins is by typing it into the calculator.  The app will tell you immediately what your handful of change is worth in one of 132 other countries.

Currency Calculator dynamically updates exchange rates at the touch of a button.  The app also can be adjusted to check for updates on its own. But in the end, why pay for something that you can get for nothing?
