Cocktails like a True Bartender

Oct 8, 2012

I enjoy all kinds of drinks from PBR to Château Lafite Rothschild, but was completely at a lost when it came to mixed drinks. I recently went to a Speakeasy bar in NYC and became fascinated watching a bartender work magic and make delicious potions. That’s when I decided to learn the basic skills of mixology through apps on my iPad.

Speakeasy Cocktails: Learn from the Modern Mixologists

Not only does this appbook have an enormous list of diverse recipes, but videos and tips for how to make them. I learned proper techniques, as well developed a deep understanding of which ingredients go together so that I can invent drinks of my own.

Mixology™ Drink & Cocktail Recipes (Free)

Very nice app with many features: recipe list, enter what ingredients you have and it suggests recipes, liquor locator. Basically a nice list of recipes if you already feel comfortable mixing.

Top Shelf Drinks

Similar to Mixology except it offers a ‘Favorite’ sections so you can keep track of your favorite recipes.

Top Martini Recipes – Trendy Drinks (Free)

For all you James Bond wannabes out there. Although this is a specific app, martinis are an important drink to be able to mix.

Basically like 4square for drinks. Say you want to make an old fashion but have never tasted a good one before; read some reviews and find a bar with a great reputation so you can learn what it is supposed to taste like.

2000 Shots

Shots can be just as intricate and delicious as mixed drinks…and even harder to make in some cases. This will teach you to make shots in the classiest way possible.

The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Bartending

From sober to sleep, this app offers mixology techniques as well as a blood alcohol checker, built in maps and taxi, even pickup lines! This is a really fun app, but won’t make you a pro bar tender.

Bartender Challenge

Really fun and useful app. Quizzes to test if you know what ingredients are in which drinks. Perfect if you want to become an actual bartender and are having a tough time remembering specifics.

Gametender: Drinking Games

Like drinking games? This is the perfect app for you. More games listed than you could possibly ever play.

As always, safety first! This can help you keep track of how many drinks you’ve had so you can know when it is time to slow down.
