Call anywhere in the world with Viber iPhone app

I wasn’t sure about Viber when I first heard of it. The app claims free calls to any iPhone user anywhere in the world as long as the other person has Viber, as well. Not so fast. Doesn’t AT&T allow you to talk to five friends, free, so why bother with Viber?

Other than the sound quality being excellent (Viber uses AT&T’s data network and not its cellular network), there are a number of nice features that makes this app worth picking up.

– There are no ads to speak of, at this time, which is pretty remarkable, since Viber is totally free.

– There are no international charges: That is, if you’re calling from home. I probably would advise not to use Viber unless you have a great overseas data plan (Viber uses AT&T’s data network).

– There are no registration, passwords or user names to worry about. Viber uses your phone number as your identity. So, as long as the recipient has Viber, he or she will recognize you.

– Easily identify Viber contacts: Viber is on the same line along with a telephone icon.

– It’s transparent. If your phone is on, so is Viber, ready to receive and make phone calls.

– Another great feature: Let’s say you don’t have phone service in a certain area that prohibits you from receiving calls or your phone was shut off. Well, Viber will notify you of missed calls when your phone service is restored. I’m not sure AT&T will do that!

And coming soon, Viber will be available for Android, iPod Touch and iPad users. Registration is a snap; you give Viber your phone number, and it sends you a pass code, you enter it, and that’s it.
