Brookings Institution in an app; it’s improbable but it works

With its impeccable reputation for public policy research and innovative solutions to foster American democracy, social and economic welfare, and security, it is hard to believe that the work of the Brookings Institution could be contained in an iPhone app.

But the free Brookings app does a great job of consolidating news, opinion and research content for consumption via your mobile device.

The home page of the app features a long scrolling list of articles written by Brookings’ distinguished staff. Topics range from the U.S. relations with the Muslim world to improving retirement security.

The app allows users to search by topics, including a list of “Brookings Priorities,” which are the think tank’s special areas of research. In addition to written text, there are plenty of videos, although they largely feature talking heads and err on the dull side (except for public policy wonks, maybe).

All work is properly attributed, and you can search a database of all Brookings scholars and contact via email if so desire.  Lastly, the app includes a list of major upcoming events, including the various conferences and workshops. You can check by date, time and location, and even register to attend via the app. All listings include full schedules of speakers and other specifics.
