Getting a degree at an art school prevented me from enjoying much of the insanity/camaraderie that the college sports calendar provides. On the plus side, it allowed me to immerse myself in any number of interesting games without the guilt of being beholden to one team simply because they gave me the most grant money. That said, you won’t find me trumping up the Notre Dame football app any time soon, so here are some of the best looking college football apps that should get you ready for the 2011 season.

The most basic of apps, College Football Schedules and Scores 2011 won’t blow you over with information, but when you just want to check some scores on game day, it’ll have what you need. Promising scores and schedules for every Division 1 team, you could probably spend an hour just looking at each team’s schedule if you wanted. If there’s a downside, it’s that scores will only update every fifteen minutes, which might not be timely enough for the average super-fan.
Sporting News NCAA Football (Free)
If you’re looking for a little more info besides the score of the game, the Sporting News NCAA Football should give you the fix you need. Packed with scores and stats, the key feature of the Sporting News app is its news feed. That should keep you updated on all the major college football goings-on during the weeks ahead. You can also set a favorite team so you can follow your alma mater even easier than before.
College Football Trivia and More (Free)
For the trivia buff who also loves college football, the College Football Trivia and More app should prove a fun diversion when the games are getting a bit slow. Over 200 questions fill this app with at least enough of a challenge to keep you busy for a few weeks of the season. There are also stadium facts in case you like to know your stadium architecture.
College Football Radio ($0.99)
This might be the most technologically ambitious app in the bunch. College Football Radio isn’t just providing you the audio for the national game of the week, but for 75 different teams. You can use the built-in team schedules to find out exactly which games are available to listen to and then basically spend the rest of your days getting the local take on whatever game you want to hear. There’s tremendous value to be found here if you don’t mind streaming radio off your iPhone.
College Football Guru ($2.99)
Just because NFL football takes up the most gambling attention doesn’t mean you can’t look at the lines for NCAA games. After all, this is all just for entertainment purposes, right? College Football Guru lets you make pretend wagers on teams along with whoever else is using the app. From there, you can compare results and see who made the best bets. If you’re the type of person who’s always trying to prove you know more about football than your friends, this might be your app.
