Best Halloween Apps

Oct 22, 2011

I am an elementary school teacher who is collecting Halloween apps as a seasonal treat for the kids. My requirements are: halloween theme, creative, no violence, no gore, nothing frightening. Just fun.

Millie’s Book of Tricks and Treats

I found this app in Apple’s New & Noteworthy section on the app store homepage, and it sure is featured for good reason! In a sea of very similar Halloween offerings, this one is surprisingly original. It’s cute, it’s hilarious, it’s creative–and there’s nothing scary about it!

Carve It! Pumpkin Carving

Out of all of the pumpkin carving apps, this one allows you to draw your own face (rather then select from pre-made elements), and it also lights your jack-o-lantern with a candle when you’re done. It’s simple, but it does what you’d expect in a “make a pumpkin” app.

Wood Puzzle Halloween

Simple, but well made, this app is fun for younger kids.

Biscuit Visits the Pumpkin Patch

A charming, 15 year old book which has been adapted for touch devices. You can read it yourself or have it read to you. Includes coloring pages and other nice extras.

What was I Scared of? – Dr. Seuss

It’s Dr Seuss, so the story is great, and the app offers multiple ways to read the book, including having it read aloud with read-along highlighting.

Mickey’s Spooky Night Puzzle Book

Although we normally try to keep Disney out of the classroom to make room for less commercial fare, for Halloween, I’ll include this puzzle book. The app doesn’t have the bells & whistles Disney’s other apps have, but it’s well made and it includes several puzzles for kids.
