Ever need to avoid your friends?  Your iPhone or Android could help.  Even if that means keeping your buddies from viewing your whereabouts or your iPhone’s photos, we all need a certain amount of control over our privacy.

Using GPS or Caller ID, you can avoid your friends when you need to.  There are several Android and iPhone apps that can help you get away in every sense of the phrase.

iPhone and Android apps for GPS hiding

If you’d like to take the idea of hiding from friends in the literal sense, Hide and Seek with GPS could offer an afternoon of fun with the whole group. In the park or the city, this $1.99 iPhone game is a real-time game tool. Two options of game play offer a fun round of “It.”

Brightkite (free) is an iPhone app that lets you share your location with your friends, but it also lets you hide from some based on privacy settings.  The Brightkite iPhone app’s updates provide additional settings for sharing certain items across Twitter and Facebook.

Glympse is a free iPhone and Android app for users that is all about managing your location-based communication with your friends.  Focusing on the privacy and one-on-one interactions, Glympse offers more options than the more general settings of other similar Android and iPhone apps.

Privacy Driven Android and iPhone apps

Sometimes, it’s only pieces of you that need to be hidden; certain photos in your iPhone’s gallery, perhaps. The Picture Safe iPhone will hide those photos for you for $1.99.  Photos can be stored in separate, private folders, which are password protected. Photo “disguises” offers a safe mode to divert nosy friends.

Want a more automated way of avoiding your friends? Try YouMail for the iPhone or Android. Set up personalized voicemail greetings to ward off the friends you’d rather not speak to, or block certain numbers all together. The app is free, but certain features of YouMail’s service require a paid premium account.

Alone Time, Far and Away

The Barnes & Noble eBook reader and Bookstore apps both offer great ways to avoid your friends.  Both are free, with one able to give you instant access to mobile versions of your library, and the bookstore giving you directions to the nearest location. Spend some time alone one way or the other.

Need to get really far away from your friends? Plan a trip with the free Kayak Android or iPhone app.  Search flights, hotels and car rentals.  Create your plans and save your trip itinerary, which you will have handy on your mobile phone during your trip.
