Apps for Tumblr Fans

May 8, 2011

Tumblr is a blogging platform that allows users to post text, images, video, links, quotes, and audio to their tumblelog, a short-form blog. Users are able to “follow” other users and see their posts together on their dashboard. Although there is a native Tumblr app there are also several other apps that expand the Tumblr experience.

Of course the first suggested app for tumblr fans is the actual Tumblr app. I use the tumblr app more for posting new items than browsing others. Just like the web version posting options include: text, photo, quote, links, chat, audio, & video. The app also has the dashboard option to browse other posting from people you follow and Like/Favorite/Heart their items as well. The reason I don’t browse much using this app is only 10 items load per page and there are several tumblr alternative apps that allow you to view several items at once.

Since a large percentage of tumblr posts are photos. This is a great app to watch in a slideshow format just photo postings of people you follow. With the touch of the “Play” button you can sit back and watch the fun photos of quotes, landscapes, fashion and more flip through. There is a Stop option if you want to Like or Reblog any of the photos. I love that this app remembers where I left off so I don’t have to re-watch photos I already viewed.

Tumblr Door

this is the ultimate quick overview tumblr app. With photos for viewing in a grid like structure you can quickly view 20 photos at a time. That’s pretty impressive on the tiny iPhone screen real estate. If you want to view a photo larger or just flip through like the iPhone photo album it’s a pretty intuitive process. Although there is a reblog feature, I wish there were some of the reblog options like adding to que or reblogging to a different tumblr account than your default (for those of us who have more than one tumblr).

Like Tumblr Gear this app is shows tumblr posts in a slide show format. The differentiator is that you have the option of view only photo posts or all tumblr photos from your followers. I did notice when using this app on the go, if my service gets low the app tends to crash. Some of the other apps just start spinning while they are looking for service. The settings on this app let you customize your experience. I have mine set to 3 seconds for the slideshow, but you can set it as slow as 180 seconds.

and last but certainly not least, the popular growing photo sharing app Instagram allows you to set one of your sharing locations to your Tumblr blog. I think many people, myself included, are sharing more of their day to day life on tumblr because of the instagram integration.
