App Industry Roundup: iPhone 4’s multitasking gets boost from RAM upgrade

Details of the iPhone 4 are still coming, including this nugget: it will have twice the RAM as the iPhone 3Gs. Also in today’s App Industry Roundup, we look at hot new iPhone games from E3 and note that one iPhone fanatic has already pitched a tent.

RAM doubled in iPhone 4

Even though the iPhone 4 will be in millions of consumers’ hands come June 24, there are still a few things we don’t know about the phone. Such as, how adept and quick will it be when it comes to handling all that new multi-tasking?

Pretty quick, apparently. While Apple doesn’t include this tidbit on the iPhone’s published spec sheet, it looks like the phone will have 512mb of RAM. In other words, that’s twice the capacity of the iPhone 3Gs, and surprisingly, the iPad. The added RAM “should help overall performance and multi-tasking on the new iPhone 4,” writes MacRumors.com “It could also explain why the iMovie App that Apple introduced at WWDC will only run on the iPhone 4.”

MacRumors also notes that the iPhone 3G has only 128mb of RAM, which “simply isn’t enough RAM,” to support the multitasking feature so many people are anxious to use on the new iPhone.

E3 wrap-up: Top new games coming for the iPhone

In case you missed this week’s gaming news from the E3 conference, here are some of the top games you can expect soon.

— Another installment from the popular Final Fantasy series is coming to the iPhone. Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, based on a PlayStation Portable game, and Secret of Mana, are expected soon from Square Enix to compliment current App Store residents Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II.

— Coming to iTunes on July 1 is a game called Predators, based on the coming movie. You play the alien and get to blast the humans. Good times!

— You love the classic Space Invaders game? Well how about Space Invaders-themed utilities for your iPhone? There will be a Space Invaders clock, battery meter, calculator, flashlight and, for the super-geek, a business card. You know you want ’em!

— Best of show. The IGN staff nominated Puzzle Agent, from Telltale games, as its best iPhone game of the E3 show. The game does look lovely, as cartoonist Graham Annable partnered with Telltale to create the game. It’s coming soon. Here are the rest of IGN’s top 2010 E3 game picks, for all platforms.

The iPhone 4 camping begins!

OK, folks, do you really need to sleep overnight to be the first kid on your block to have the new iPhone? Every year?

Apparently so, and the camping has already started in Dallas. A gentleman named Justin says, “I’m a very determined fan. In fact I just might be one the biggest Apple fans you will actually meet. I have been the first costumer for this store since 2008 when the iPhone 3G was released.”

He also reports that he’s out of work, he already pre-ordered an iPhone and that he’s doing this as “a fun experience.” OK, nothing says fun to me like a week-long camping trip on pavement in the summer heat of Texas. Have a blast, Justin!
