Android apps for Memorial Day Weekend and the summer beyond

Memorial Day Weekend marks the start of the summer season, so why not celebrate? There are a few Android apps that will get you in the holiday spirit, whether you’re commemorating the day itself, or going on a shopping spree.

From menu-planning to photo-sharing, these Android apps will make your Memorial Day Weekend a memorable one.

For the holiday

The US Holidays & Special Occasions Android app lets you mark your upcoming celebrations with helpful countdown s for each. The $1.99 Android app gives you a complete list of upcoming holidays, with Wikipedia links so you can learn their significance. An update to the app allows you to add custom events as well, though it could use better calendar sync options.

AP Mobile is utilizing Android apps to push out small and specific apps, including the recently added Today in History.  For 99 cents, you’ll get a daily history lesson, making it relevant to your current day. Though it’s not a free app, the small price may be worth a conveniently delivered piece of history beyond a single holiday.

With many able to tack an extra day onto their weekends, travel is a must. Kayak’s free planning tool combines flight and hotel search, with flight tracking and itinerary management capabilities. Whether you need one or all search options, it’s nice to have a mobile tool that can deliver them all to your Android phone.

Party-planning

Whether you’re planning or attending an event over Memorial Day Weekend, Facebook can get you socially oriented. Announce your event to others, or search for some local activities. Post photos from the event, comment on others, and generally keep in touch.

Grill masters will appreciate this unfortunately misspelled app; Your Babeque Recipes on Android lets you create detailed recipes around your creations. Add a title and description, ingredients and cooking instructions. Create shopping lists around ingredients and share your recipes via SMS or email. This app can, of course, be used to save any recipe, helping you remember new holiday traditions.

Shopping

Mygoefer2go is a handy tool from Sears that lets you create a quick shopping list based on items you’ve purchased in the past. When last-minute planning is in order, this free Android app helps you stay organized without losing precious time. Pick up items at the nearest Kmart store.

My Coupons will tell you where the nearest stores are having deals.  In-store deals and online coupons are the specialties of this free Android app. Mark your calendar or notepad of an upcoming sale, or see if you’ve got the best deal by running a barcode scan for local pricing.

Once you’re ready to hit the store, Price Book Shopping List will be your jack-of-all-trades. Speech recognition lets you perform multiple functions on this app, such as adding items to a list. Search for items via barcode scanner, add photos and re-categorize your data to suit your needs. Set alarms manually or based on location, so you’ll be ready to catch all the sales and throw the greatest summer soirees.
