A bushel of apps for a tasty harvest season

There is something about the cool autumn air that makes you feel warm inside. We embrace the seasonal appeal of apple cider and pumpkin patches as we watch the trees and produce change.  Let your iPhone in on the fun and check out these apps to enjoy autumn’s harvest to the fullest.

Food

What is more synonymous with autumn than its harvest? Stock your shelves with ripe produce, which  Harvest – Select the Best Produce ($2.99) can help sniff out. Search produce by name and Harvest will tell you how to pick the item in the store. See pesticide levels for organic and non-organic produce and make it last with useful storing instructions.

Whether you are traveling or you would like to support local farmers, AllOrganic (99 cents) shows you nearby farmers markets and organic restaurants. Call or map location, or visit their website. The saved shopping list option is handy but I would like to save favorite locations as well. Likewise, iFarm Market (99 cents) is dedicated to finding nearby farmers markets. With a database larger than most other apps, iFarm Market lets you search and view details of thousands of markets across the U.S. See their schedules and other details, and map your way there based on your GPS location.

Locavore ($2.99) is designed for those that like to eat local food when it is in season. While the app does not tap into specific farmers markets, it does indicate which foods are grown in your area so you can support your community. View produce on a national map and read reviews of local eateries from other users.

Eating organic is often equated with a simpler lifestyle. Check out Simply Organic (free) if you need ideas for organic meal recipes. Search by category and meal type, and add ingredients to your shopping list directly from the app. Find local stores and view the ratings and reviews of other users.

Local activities

If you are more inclined to need a social app for eating at a local organic restaurant, try Center’d (free).  In addition to providing a wealth of search filters, maps and other details, the Center’d app lets you plan an outing with friends and search according to your social needs.  How cozy is that?

Also, Loopt (free) is a very social and location-based iPhone app that helps you find local activities. During fall, meet friends for a haunted house outing or find the nearest apple orchard for the kids. See where your friends are and make plans on the spot for a Sunday trip to the farmers market.

Holiday & Décor

If you live in an area where autumn does not hit full force, or you would just like to take a piece of autumn with you, then Autumn Leaves (99 cents) may be up your alley. Stir up fallen leaves and watch colorful leaves fall from trees. Customize leaf size, fall speed and your background to get the most from this quaint app.
