Pocket MBA brings business school (and typos) to your iPhone

Using apps to study is nothing new, but actually going to school on your iPhone takes modern education to a new level.

Pocket MBA is a crash course in business, with seven comprehensive chapters on topics like business strategy, law, economics and more. The lectures are written by Dr. Jae K. Shim, a professor of business at California State University, Long Beach, and co-author of more than 50 professional business books over his 30-year career as a CEO, consultant and educator.

It’s hard to get past the app’s $29.99 cost, but Pocket MBA is about more than just reading the text. The app also offers multiple-choice exams on material covered in each chapter, grading you on the spot and changing the questions every time you retake a test so you’re not tempted to cheat.

The app also offers flashcards for more practice, which are designed like an exam but then displays the correct answer after each question with short blurbs explaining why.

The interface feels a little outdated, like one of those old textbooks schools refuse to replace, and the text is poorly formatted for the iPhone screen, making already dense content even more difficult to read.

To make things worse, don’t be surprised if you stumble upon a typo or two as you read. They’re never bad enough to confuse the reader, but let’s just say that it will be a long time before Pocket MBA stands out as prestigious on your resume.
