New iPhone apps worth downloading: Vodio Video Magazine update, StatNut, Skylanders Lost Islands

Check out all the most popular videos on the Internet and find your own with the newly updated Vodio Video Magazine, today’s leading new app. You can track your social networking activity with StatNut and create your own kingdom with Skylanders: Lost Islands.

Vodio Video Magazine update (Free)

What’s it about? Video app Vodio collects popular videos in a variety of categories and makes them available to stream to your iOS devices.

What’s cool? Vodio’s most recent update adds a lot more control for its users. Now you can create channels of your own, instead of just watching the most popular clips other people have liked, and add YouTube channels, Facebook and Twitter pages. It also supports new channel recommendations and comes with a robust search feature.

Who’s it for? Fans of videos should definitely give Vodio a look. The app was great for finding the latest and greatest video clips on the web before, and now it comes with a great deal more freedom through customization.

What’s it like? NowThis News aggregates videos and news in the same way as Vodio; if you have an iPad, give Newsy a try.

StatNut ($0.99)

What’s it about? StatNut gathers quick stats from a variety of your social networking accounts. Want to know how much you’ve tweeted, or how many Facebook updates you’ve sent out? StatNut can show you.

What’s cool? It’s a bit of a novelty without a whole lot of real use, but StatNut can be fun if these sorts of numbers interest you. You can plug in social networking accounts from YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and others, and the slick interface aggregates all the numbers on your screen for quick and easy viewing. You don’t necessarily have to own the accounts, either, so you can compare activity from one account to another if you like.

Who’s it for? If you’re an absolute social networking kingpin, StatNut might be fun for you (especially when comparing to your other social network-nut friends).

What’s it like? You can learn about your social networking stats (and influence) from Klout, and get some follow recommendations and discovery help for Twitter from Discover People.

Skylanders Lost Islands (Free)

What’s it about? Based in the same universe as the other Skylanders games for consoles and iOS, Skylanders Lost Islands is a building game in which you create and manage your own kingdom.

What’s cool? All the basic elements of these social games are here. You build stuff by spending energy and waiting a set amount of time for things to happen. Lost Islands sets itself apart through its art style because it not only looks like the other Skylanders games, it has a great cartoon quality as well. More than that, it strikes the right balance of story and adventure, allowing you to send characters on missions and unlock fragments of story over time.

Who’s it for? The focus here is on younger players, Skylanders fans, and the casual audience. If games in the vein of Farmville interest you, this one likely will.

What’s it like? There are lots of other games that offer a similar experience to Lost Islands, but some of our favorites are Jurassic Park Builder and The Simpsons: Tapped Out.
