New iPhone apps worth downloading: Triposo update, Penguin Pre-K, Man of Steel

Start the week planning your next trip with the help of Triposo, a travel guide app that brings tons of information about a huge number of destinations and countries. We’ve also got Penguin Pre-K, a learning game app for kids who haven’t started Kindergarten yet, and Man of Steel, a 3-D dueling title that ties in with the newly released movie.

Triposo update (Free)

What’s it about? Travel app Triposo provides tons of information about different places destinations and countries around the world.

What’s cool? Triposo is a travel guide that’s packed full of info about the places you might visit, from a huge list of countries. When you download the app, you pick which country you’re going to be visiting and, using your Internet connection, Triposo grabs everything you need to know about it and downloads it to your device. Each country comes with an overview map, plus more detailed maps and information about major cities, with recommendations about things like restaurants, nightlife and more. There’s even a currency calculator so you’ll know how much you have and should pay, and the app’s latest update throws in maps for 20,000 small towns and more detailed offline maps, as well.

Who’s it for? If you’re into traveling, Triposo has lots of stuff you can use.

What’s it like? You’ll also get a lot of use out of Kayak and TripAdvisor.

Penguin Pre-K (Free)

What’s it about? Help kids get a leg-up on learning concepts from school with Penguin Pre-K, an app filled with educational games.

What’s cool? Penguin Pre-K is one of a group of apps with material curated by a former Kindergarten teacher that’s aimed at providing educational games to kids of different ages. In Pre-K, the games are focused on areas like numbers 0-5, simple shapes and colors. There’s also a sticker art section of the app where kids can make images that they can share with others, and points earned during the games can be used to unlock new costumes for penguins

Who’s it for? As the title suggests, Penguin Pre-K is aimed at kids who haven’t yet started Kindergarten.

What’s it like? You might also check out Kindergarten and Preschool Learning Games and KinderTown for more early learning games.

Man of Steel ($2.99)

What’s it about? Take on the role of Superman and smash bad guys in Man of Steel, the official tie-in game with the new movie.

What’s cool? Playing as Superman is, in itself, pretty sweet. Players fight through one-on-one duels with the likes of General Zod and other Kryptonian baddies, executing massive combos as Superman pummels them into oblivion. There are a lot of cinematic, fast battles in which players have to dodge attacks and execute their own, similar to what’s seen in games such as Infinity Blade. You’ll also have access to Superman’s gamut of powers, such as his heat vision and the ability to fly. Man of Steel packs a story mode that focuses on the Superman narrative, and there’s also a survival mode in which you can see how many fights you can handle before you crack under the pressure.

Who’s it for? Fans of The Man of Steel and third-person dueling titles will have fun with Man of Steel.

What’s it like? Try developer Phosphor Games’ other titles, Horn and Dark Meadow.
