iPhone App Video Review: Velocispider

The premise of Velocispider is that an evil CEO is hungry for araknasaur eggs, and he refuses to have anything else for breakfast. He then sets his horrible seafood army upon you, full of roboticized sharks, whales, octopi, and more. The game has you defending three eggs as an araknasaur mother with a laser on your head. The story is only the backdrop of the game, but it’s so over the top it’s fantastic.

The gameplay consists of tilting the device to move while you automatically fire your laser nonstop. Usually I dislike tilt controls, but they are very well done here, and the game is easy to control, even in hairy situations that require precision. I didn’t even learn until I was having trouble during a boss fight that you can touch the screen and hold it anywhere to charge your laser into a super shot. Using these mechanics you fend off the hordes of robots after your eggs. The game has 20 waves total, and it can get pretty challenging. The idea is to beat as many waves as you can, losing as few lives and eggs as you can, to go for that high score. The game integrates Game Center leaderboards to create some extra competition for you.

The retro graphics and music are gorgeous, especially if you love retro styled games like I do. The one song did get really repetitive after a while, but it is an awesome song. The color scheme of reds, pinks, purples, and blues works very well here. This is definitely a very cool app, and it will only cost you one dollar, so pick it up soon. Now my biggest fear is that they are trying to genetically engineer some real araknasaurs in some military lab somewhere. The day that happens; humanity might as well just give up.
