iPhone App Video Review: Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack!

Much like Duke Nukem in Duke Nukem Forever, someone seeks to raise this gaming icon of days gone by in the modern world, except Sam’s game actually looks fun.

The first thing I thought when playing this game was that it was a little too similar to Lame Castle. Then I found out they were developed by the same studio, and I felt all kinds of silly. Though they are both running games with the same basic mechanic, Kamikaze Attack differs in several ways. For one, It’s far more perilous and violent, for obvious reasons, and you are expected to die a lot, whereas Lame Castle was more of just a fun romp. You chase down Sam in each level and give him a special death hug, avoiding bombs, missiles, and spike pits all the way. Touching the left side of the screen lets you jump, while touching the right side lets you perform Lieu Kang’s awesome bicycle kick. The Kamikaze’s must play a lot of Mortal Kombat back at the office, or something. If you kick too much though, you’ll preemptively detonate out of pure rage and hatred, so it must be used sparingly across all of your lives.

Like Lame Castle, there are several bonus goals for each level, such as kicking a certain amount of missiles or cacti, or sometimes just winning the level. Bonus goals let you unlock permanent boosts to things like your rage meter or life pool. The same gorgeous painted style of Lame Castle is present here, only it’s more detailed and awesome. The only two locales are a desert and jungle, littered with objects and far off places from the Serious Sam world. There are endless challenges to complete, and several OpenFeint achievements to unlock. You can even purchase wacky heads for your kamikazes, if you wish. My only real complaint with the game is that it gets repetitive fairly quickly. After a certain point early on, it’s basically the same exact thing over and over again. Just make sure to play this game in short bursts. This is a great iOS universal app for fans of running games or Serious Sam fans who’ve been longing to hear that endearing Kamikaze scream, and it’s only one dollar. Check it out.

P.S. Have you guys seen that trailer for Serious Sam 3 where it tells the story of people applying to be headless kamikaze’s like it’s a normal career choice? Hilarious stuff, I definitely recommend you watch it. Also, the HD and iOS universal Lame Castle HD is now free in the app store in celebration of this game, so pick that up too.
