iPhone App Video Review: Bring Me Sandwiches!!

The earth has been invaded by a giant alien overlord called Gourmo. Gourmo is very hungry. The government, with all of its resources and intelligence, calls upon a simple fast food worker named Jimmy Nugget to save the earth from Gourmo’s wrathful appetite. For some reason, this poor pathetic man is clearly the world’s only hope.

Each level involves collecting ingredients based on Gourmo’s orders. He may want one sandwich or three, and he may want soccer balls or live kittens as toppings. After collecting a piece of bread from Gourmo’s helpers, you just walk over various items and they’re automatically stacked up to create a towering masterpiece of a sandwich that even Scooby Doo and Shaggy could be proud of. Each time you turn in a sandwich, you’ll be given a larger piece of bread that can hold larger ingredients. These ingredients range from tin cans, live animals, flowers, hats, and eventually things as large as crates, benches, statues, small buildings, and even live people. Oh, and every now and then you’ll actually come across real food that is actually edible, like cheese, chili peppers, and burgers. Gourmo takes you all around the world as his food mood changes, taking you to Mexico, Italy, and Japan, bringing a lot of variety to the ingredients.

The game plays very similarly to the Katamari games. You have to scour a level to find smaller items in order to get larger pieces of bread. Taking larger items away, such as fire hydrants that spray towers of water, will give you access to new parts of the level. Then you do it all again. Certain power ups are scattered across levels, such as a double-jump-granting jetpack, ingredient magnet, or keys to special areas. You’ll also find a hidden or hard to reach piece of a spaceship in every level. You can play with tilt, touch, or button controls, and they all work well.

The game’s art is vibrant and colorful, much like Monsters Ate My Condo. Everything is designed to be humorous and preposterous, and the game pulls this off well. Game Center achievements and leaderboards are supported, and the game can be yours for just one dollar. This game is unlike anything out there, and loads of fun. I can’t wait to see what Adult Swim puts out next.
