Five puzzle apps to reclaim your Sunday

By now you’ve noticed the pattern. Every Sunday for the foreseeable future, your good friends, significant other, and everyone else you know, are going to be huddled in front of a TV hollering about football. Though you couldn’t care less, you don’t want to go to some football-free zone and be alone either. Well, here are some apps you can enjoy on the end of the couch while your friends yell about first downs. This way you’ll still enjoy all of the delicious spoils of football Sundays without any of the football!

Crosswords ($9.99)

All right, I realize this is an expensive app. I mean, really expensive for a bunch of crossword puzzles, but hear me out. There are a lot of crossword puzzles here! You’ll get daily crosswords from a dozen different sources including the Onion A.V. Club, NY Times, Village Voice and Newsday. And you’ll get new ones every day. You can save them up and go to town each Sunday while your friends tease you for not knowing who the Cowboy’s starting QB is.

JustSudoku ($1.99)

If you’re more into numbers than words, JustSudoku should give you what you want. The sparse app features 100,000 unique puzzles and four difficulty levels. It even has a dark-friendly version so you can keep playing during those late Sunday night and Monday Night Football games. About the only thing it won’t do is put the chips on the table into your mouth.

PaCoDoku (Free)

Say that you don’t like words and you barely even like numbers. Oddly enough, there is a Sudoku app that you could enjoy too. PaCoDoku focuses on colors and shapes. So you have to line up red, blue and green squares, circles and triangles just like you would the usual 1-9 numbers in Sudoku. The best part is that unlike the other apps in this article, it’ll cost you nothing to experience a whole new style of Sudoku.

Hanging With Friends (Free)

Words with Friends is old news. But everyone loves Hangman, so why not try Hanging with Friends? This would be particularly ideal if you had another friend over that also didn’t really care much for football. The two of you could sit and play hangman to your Heart’s content while ignoring every dropped pass that your roommate won’t stop screaming about.

Brain Tease ($0.99)

For all of your puzzle needs not covered in the apps above, Brain Tease should do the trick. There are number puzzles, logic puzzles, and numerous other challenges that will test your patience and wits. Admittedly, these would be harder to concentrate on during a football game, but maybe doing them successfully in that state would make your knowledge even more powerful? There’s only one way to find out!
