Fandango Movies app compared on the iPhone and Android

Movie goers may delight at the growing number of mobile apps making it easier to find new shows at local theaters.  As Fandango has released an Android version of its localized flick finder, it’s becoming  clear that big brands have a vested interest in launching apps beyond the iPhone.

When compared to the Fandango Movies iPhone app, included in the curated lists Five Great Movie Resources and Top Movie Related Apps, the Android version is quite similar. This is not totally unexpected for a mobile app of this nature—the bulk of the app’s function revolves around GPS location and theater searches.  Little about the iPhone and an Android-supported device would restrict the Fandango Movies app on either platform.

Upon launch, you can search for a movie based on your current location using your GPS, or by manually entering a location.  From there, you can filter your movie search based on current releases or coming attractions, or by drilling down into films based on release date, popularity or vicinity.

The details of the film give you a synopsis, fan rating and show times for local theaters. If direct ticket purchasing is available, you’ll see a tiny ticket icon.  Redemption of that ticket depends on the theater, though Fandango also keeps a record of your purchase history and stores your credit card info. This is also accessible via the Fandango Movies app for the iPhone and Android.

For theater details, you receive contact information including a phone number and a map.  Call the theater by tapping on the phone number, or access directions via the map.

One feature I would like to see on both the iPhone and Android versions of the Fandango Movies app is a Google Maps toggle option which incorporates the new navigation options for Google Maps, or at least more access to some of Google Maps’ other interactive options.
