Bad Robot-created Action Movie FX app puts blockbuster special effects in your iOS movies

A new app produced by the studio behind Star Trek and Cloverfield lets you bring a little bit of Hollywood to your iOS videos.

As Mashable reports, the app is called Action Movie FX, and it’s the product of Bad Robot, the production company of JJ Abrams. It’s free and works with your iOS device’s video capabilities. Fire up the video camera on your iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S through the app, and Action Movie FX adds awesome Hollywood-style special effects to your films. The two effects included in the app are a missile strike and a high-speed car wreck.

The cool thing about Action Movie FX is that you can add effects to any video. As one reviewer mentioned on iTunes, you can send digital missiles to blow up your pets or your boss, and the app won’t cost you anything to start. It also includes more special effects you can get through in-app purchases at $0.99 each.

It’s the production values of Action Movie FX that really sells it. Sound design for the app’s effects come from the famous work of Skywalker Sound, a studio that does lots of sound effects for Hollywood blockbusters. The app’s effects are inspired by the recently released Bad Robot movie Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, and definitely have an air of the big-budget action thriller, packing helicopter crashes, cars flipping end over end and lots of explosions. This isn’t Bad Robot’s first time in the App Store, either. The company had a hand in Super 8, another video app inspired by the Abrams movie of the same name that turned iOS devices into old-style Super 8 video cameras.

If you’re not a natural director, that’s okay. Action Movie FX offers a few tips to help make the effects look correct so you can get the look you’re going for. And when you’re done, it’s easy to share the finished product with others, as well, with videos saving to your device’s camera roll or uploading to Twitter and Facebook. For free, the app is a whole lot of fun and a cool way to add some pizazz to your home iPhone videos.
